It’s a book lovers favorite holiday, National Read a Book a Day!

According to the National Day Calendar website today is read a book day 🙂

Below, I’ve got some highlights about the day for you so next time someone complains about all of the time you spend reading you can let them know about all of the positive benefits to reading!

Read A Book Day

National Read A Book Day is observed annually on September 6th.  On August 9th, we all celebrated National Book Lovers Day.  These two days are very similar in nature .  The difference would be that today is about everyone, book lovers and non book lovers alike to find a book they would enjoy, find a nice, quiet and relaxing spot and read for a while.

It is time to turn off the television and other electronics and enjoy the relaxation of reading.  You may have young children or elderly in your home, if so, then you can spend quality time together by reading them a book or two.

Reading is very good for improving memory and concentration as well as reducing stress.   Reading books is among brain-stimulating activities shown to slow down cognitive decline in old age with people who participated in more mentally stimulating activities over their lifetimes having a slower rate of decline in memory and other mental capacities.

Reading is a good way to learn about other times, other places and many other things and is also a very affordable means of entertainment.

Let’s step back in time for a minute:

  • The very first books used parchment or vellum (calf skin) for the book pages.
  • The book covers were made of wood and often covered with leather.
  • The books were fitted with clasps or straps.
  • Public libraries appeared in the Middle Ages.
  • Books in public libraries were often chained to a bookshelf or a desk to prevent theft.

Moving forward:

Book manufacturing’s recent development include the development of digital printing.  Book pages are printed using toner rather than ink.  The development of digital printing has also opened up the possibility of print-on-demand,  where no books are printed until after an order is received from a customer.

E-books are rapidly increasing in popularity.  E-book (electronic book) refers to a book-length publication in digital form.  They are normally available through the internet however,  can also be found on CD-ROM and other forms.  E-books are read either by computer or via a portable book display device known as an e-book reader, such as a Reader, Nook or Kindle.

Reading can be educational, enjoyable and informative!

Sit back, relax and read a book.  Use #ReadABookDay to post on social media.

Our research was unable to find the creator and the origin of National Read A Book Day, an “unofficial” national holiday.

Soooooooo, now that you know about National Read A Book Day, tell me, how are you spending today? I’m headed out to an early birthday lunch and then coming back home to cozy up in bed with my ARC of Claire Contreras’ Paper Hearts, which releases this Wednesday. And mattress shopping. I spend 90% of my time at home in my room reading, blogging, and doing school work so my space needs to be comfortable, I’ll be checking out the Casper Mattress‘s, I’ve been hearing a ton of great things about them!

What are you reading today? What’s your favorite reading place?
