I don’t even think I know the words to fully express how fan-freakin-tastic Pulse was! It completely surpassed my expectations. I mean I knew it was going to be a great story, but great doesn’t even scratch the surface. Obviously if you’ve read Collide you know how it ended (if you haven’t read Collide yet stop reading this and immediately lock yourself in your reading cave with food and water and read it and follow it up with Pulse only stopping for bathroom breaks! Go ahead, I’ll wait)
Ok. Pulse picks up right where Collide left off with Emily leaving that dickwad Dillion (I can’t even say his name without a sneer. Gail has given me a character I absolutely LOVE to HATE! I hate him with every fiber of my being. If he was on fire I wouldn’t pee on him to put him out for the way he treated Emily and took every advantage of her vulnerability and broke her down. He was even more of a douche this time around, I mean his douche baggery was at a def con level 10…Gavin on the other hand was a perfect 10 yet again and Emily finally grew stronger this time around. Despite feeling shattered over thinking her actions had cost her the future with Gavin she so desperately wanted she didn’t give up this time. She fought for him and she fought for them. With the help of Gavin’s brother she goes to find him, she’s determined to lay her feeling out there hoping like hell he’ll give them a second chance
“I stared at the ceiling half the night wondering if I could honestly go the rest of my life without kissing these lips ever again.” Gavin grazed the pad of his thumb against Emily’s mouth. Letting it linger, he traced the top and bottom. She parted her lips, her mind desperately trying to remind her how to breathe as she stared into his eyes. Gavin stepped closer. “I paced the house when I couldn’t sleep, imagining another day of not feeling this body against mine. This body was made to fit me in every possible way.”
Now, by this point I was already happily pulled in to the story, but after the two of them got back together it was a wrap! I was completely and utterly captivated inside the world of 20 questions and bottlecaps. Gail managed to once again get me to block EVERYTHING out around me. Just as with Collide, I locked myself in my room ignoring everything and everyone around me, ignored the growling of my stomach and only stopped for quick trips to the bathroom. Her writing is brilliant and she somehow manages to make her words come to life. She so easily pulls you into Emily and Gavin’s world that you can feel their tragedies and triumphs right along with them. She made me laugh with them, she made me cry with them, at one point she made me read a chapter 3 times because I thought “No, this can’t be right, I must have missed something and read it wrong” only to get to the end of said chapter and realized I read every word correctly. I thought
it was like Gail sliced open my chest and ripped out my beating heart and crushed it…ok ok maybe I’m being a little over dramatic but dammit she made my heart hurt! I was all “Nooooooo no no no no no. NO! She just did NOT do this” I may or may not have called her the B word for it. Ok, fine I did call her the B word. It went like this “OMG, dat beetch I really can’t believe she just did that to me?!?!” My friends told me to keep reading so I did. And things did become right again and that made my heart happy. I know I didn’t tell you a lot of what happened in the story but I figured that’s what the blurb is for, to tell you what happens can easily spoil something for you and I don’t want that. I couldn’t have asked for a better conclusion to the story of Gavin and Emily, sure their road to bliss may have been lined with a few potholes but they faced them head on together. Best of all we got to see firsthand a vulnerable woman whose spirit and self worth had been so beaten and broken down by an abusive man (douche bag Dillon) grow into a strong, confident, self assured woman thanks to the love of a good man.
“No, I’m what you deserve.” Gavin ducked his head, kissing her again. “You deserve a man who remembers your grandmother used to listen to jazz while she cooked.”
“I remember everything you told me.” He smoothed his hands through her hair. “I’m going to break you, Emily Cooper. I’m going to break you down and slowly build you back up. Second by second, piece by piece, and memory by memory, I’m going to make you realize you’re worth what I’m going to give to you. If I have to open a dictionary every day and make you stare at the word ‘worth,’ I’ll do it.” Gavin pulled her closer and chuckled. “I’ll even paste a picture of myself next to it.”
“When I look at you, I feel like I’m looking at the other half of myself. You’ve filled the empty space in my soul, and because of that, you’re a Goddess to me. That’s the way I’m always going to treat you. For the rest of your life. I promise you that. I fucking promise.”
This isn’t one of those stories you should read when you have the chance, this is one of those “you need to drop whatever it is your reading and read this right NOW” stories. Read it. You will not be disappointed, you will however be thinking of it long after you finish the last page.
Without a doubt Pulse is a 5 star read all the way!

I’ve always been a lover of writing, but mostly dabbled in creating poetrywhile raising my three beautiful children. I am grateful my husband offifteen years has supported me—albeit sometimes kicking and screaming—as Ipursue this “hobby” of mine. Without his help, writing would be animpossible endeavor. In late June 2012, I felt an urgent tug of my pen, and I began writing one
